A National Emblem

Design Challenge

#1: How might we keep our communities in Singapore safe and healthy during the global COVID-19 pandemic?

Project Description

The time will come when COVID passes, and the nation that stays together, will emerge stronger together. It’s easy to lose sight of this – the ‘bigger picture’ – amidst the lockdown and worsening pandemic.

A poster that’s hung at home, like how we hang flags to celebrate National Day, will be a reminder of our resilience, providing a psychological balm and a vision of our successes to come after the storm.

Criteria #1: Value

Just like how people hang movie posters, motivational quotes, and even relics to anchor their beliefs and faith, a visual imagery like a poster shows the vision the nation is moving towards and helps people remain hopeful for a brighter future.

Criteria #2: Inspiration

After our founding premier’s passing, people from all walks of life have memorabilia designed in his likeness celebrating his life and contribution to Singapore. Similarly, this design is emblematic to rally people around the fight against COVID.

Criteria #3: Impact

This design will be simple and easily replicated as stickers, decals and even posters so it can become as ubiquitous as possible, for people to paste it on their cars, doors and walls.

Criteria #4: Timeliness

The design is targeted to be launched within 3-4 months. From concept, design to prototyping and publishing takes about 2-3 months, before launching and distributing through RCs in the 4th.

Criteria #5: Systems Thinking

The idea provides the psychological defence and builds on economic, social, civil and military so far.
