Design Challenge

#3: How might we learn from COVID-19 to reimagine our future for life, work, learning and play?

Project Description

The onset of covid-19 challenges the traditional operation models of businesses and Non-profit groups and the last 2 weeks, it was evident in my perspective that small FnBs and NPOs were struggling to maintain sales and efforts due to a lack of online branding/services and/or collated channels to reach out to the public. Therefore this project proposes that data of businesses and social organizations already captured by the SG govt’s OneMap be incorporated into a new interface that would function as an e-market similar to that of Carousell to fulfil 2 goals; 1) provide platform for online branding and awareness 2) better call to action for Singaporeans to support/volunteer with respective FnBs and NPOs.

Criteria #1: Value

My observation was that small food businesses and non-profit organizations had a lack of online branding/services and/or collated channels for brand awareness because of possible reasons such as a lack of need, prior to covid19 and operations being run on a much smaller scale by individual NPOs which resulted in drastic drop of sales and the call for public help to be limited and inefficient.

Criteria #2: Inspiration

Geospatial tech in SG is growing but it hasn’t quite reach the masses in terms of promoting it’s advantages. The proposed solution leverages on the massive data captured of every fnb/social service org in OneMap and to incorporate it into a mobile optimised web-based “e-market” with similar interface to Carousell/e-commerce to create a low barrier of entry for users.

Criteria #3: Impact

The proposed mobile web-based “e-market” intends to provide small businesses and NPOs with little/no online presence, a platform for brand awareness, and collated information for Singaporeans to better identify how they can help contribute to addressing the needs of vulnerable groups.

Criteria #4: Timeliness

1st month: User research of consumer online buying patterns and features suited for NPOs, scouting for developers to program interface.
2nd month: UI prototyping , program creation.
3rd month: Iterative release
4th month: beta launch and marketing of interface
5th month: launch in market

Criteria #5: Systems Thinking

The proposed solution’s fundamental goal is to not reinvent the wheel but to leverage on open source technologies readily available to then market to the masses with an interface that is familiar and value adding.
