Singapore Reborn

Design Challenge

#3: How might we learn from COVID-19 to reimagine our future for life, work, learning and play?

Project Description

I drew Singapore that is reborn after the Covid-19. We are rethinking how we are going to live our life, from a simple task like shopping for groceries to travelling for holidays. A piece Singapore Reborn is captured in this cute, fun and easy-to-understand illustration using chibi style. This is an individual project of mine, and if I am selected, I shall involve my colleague to digitalise and fill with vibrant colours.

Criteria #1: Value

I wish to reinforce the value of maintaining personal hygiene even after Covid-19 is over. Our transport hub is a bottleneck where many people travel to work and leisure everyday. Wearing of masks should begin here especially if one is experiencing flu or cough. But we also need to relax when it is time to. Care and empathise for our close friends as well as our neighbours.

Criteria #2: Inspiration

New businesses or accelerated may spring up, eg “Ah Seng Fruits Stall” that traditionally sells fruits in a wet market may go online. A virtual reality entertainment business like “TRAVEL GEESE” may rejuvenate itself to rethink how people might like to travel to their dream destination in a safe setting.

Criteria #3: Impact

I hope my art style can lift the spirits of Singaporeans who have to stay home for another few weeks. If we think positively, we can draw inspiration from the illustration on how we can overcome adversity and find new opportunities.

Criteria #4: Timeliness

We are a team of 3 artists and we are able to enhance the illustration, eg draw it digitally in bigger image size, and print within 3 months.

Criteria #5: Systems Thinking

In the illustration, I introduce a public shower facility made out of cargo container named “RAINFALL”. Anyone can enter the shower facility and refresh himself or herself before they head to another destination or to home. With billions of dollars being poured into dealing with Covid-19, we can consider this option as a sustainable way of being a healthy and clean nation. This should be a not-for-profit Government project but at least it should break cost.
