Design Challenge
#1: How might we keep our communities in Singapore safe and healthy during the global COVID-19 pandemic?
Project Description
Whether your door is in a high-risk or low-risk area, push or pull, this idea combines the function of a door handle and sanitiser dispenser which aims to remind users to sanitise their hands coming or leaving their home.
I hope that through this product, it will improve awareness of hand hygiene through the gateway of people’s home and actually reduces cross-contamination between family members. Let’s be honest – nobody wants to touch a dirty door handle or pick up an infection!
Criteria #1: Value
Scientists have confirmed that Coronavirus (COVID-19) can survive on door handles for many days. My intention is to help reduce the risk and spread of Coronavirus between door users and also a reminder which hopefully eventual hygiene habit across all age group.
Criteria #2: Inspiration
My mum who leaves a bottle of Lysol spray, Dettol spray, alcohol and alcohol wipes beside the door entrance. She explained that she hope to remind herself and my dad to sanitise when coming home.
Criteria #3: Impact
I think about sustainability of personal hygiene habits, awareness can be made during this period but instilling habits and having a functional product is what I am aiming for.
Criteria #4: Timeliness
This product requires time for research and development specifically on the mechanism. But I do believe with external help, a prototype can be development within the stipulated time and product implementation by June with the right partner.
Criteria #5: Systems Thinking
This product can be potentially commercialise with the right partner, for example Kohler Singapore. There is some standardisation in terms of door knobs in public housing especially if we target HDB as a partner. The end users will be potentially anyone who has a door and a handle. 🙂
