Ottodot: Social Learning Platform

Design Challenge

#3: How might we learn from COVID-19 to reimagine our future for life, work, learning and play?

Project Description

We make learning fun for kids by reimagining education. By bringing bite-size quality education to kids (7-12), they can access fun and engaging video content through our social learning platform. Kids can record videos to teach other kids as well.

Criteria #1: Value

Problem: Kids find the learning process boring. Parents find it painful to get their kids to sit down and study.

Below are some key insights after working with 400+ kids:

Control: Kids enjoy learning when they get to choose what to learn. Giving them a sense of control over the learning process creates a sense of ownership.
Videos: Kids love watching and creating videos. Giving them the autonomy to create videos gets them engaged to learn.
Focus: Kids have a short attention span. Making sure that our videos are short keeps our content fun and engaging for them.

Criteria #2: Inspiration

We observe that many kids love watching and making TikTok videos. Kids also love Youtube. Did you know the highest paid Youtube Star in 2019 is 9 years old Ryan, from Ryan ToyReview? Many kids share with us that they aspire to be a Youtuber.

What if we could bring this addictive social experience into learning as well? Where kids can create fun and engaging learning videos to learn from each other.

Criteria #3: Impact

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused thousands of kids to be stuck at home. Kids used to have CCAs and extracurricular classes to occupy their time. Now parents are at wit’s end to try to occupy their kid’s time. What if we can get kids to use this time to help each other learn by creating videos?

Criteria #4: Timeliness

We are constantly thinking of ways to reach out to users to learn more from them. We launched our MVP in February and have been actively working with students and parents to improve the user experience. We are also working with our content creators to figure out how best to produce our video content to get kids excited to learn. In-person user testing sessions have been conducted as well, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have moved them online.

Criteria #5: Systems Thinking

Our learning content follows the MOE syllabus. Students can apply what they have learnt on our platform directly to their studies.

The Education System has many stakeholders, namely MOE, Schools, Teachers, Students and Parents. We focus mainly on students and parents as they are used to subscribing for online learning solutions.
